Inspired by the photography of Alejandro Cartagena, Matthew Lomax's composition, entitled B|O|R|D|E|R|S, is based on two images from Cartagena's series 'Without Walls'. The photographs depict the silhouette of a mother and daughter at the US/Mexico border. Their hands held up against the rusted metal of the border wall show how far away someone can be seem on the other side of a divide. Lomax focuses on the texture of flesh against metal with cultural links to Mexico via the use of guitar duo in his composition. "The piece highlights the theme of separation present in Cartagena's work by exploring the relationship between live and recorded guitar, sounds so close yet divided" - Matthew Lomax.
Come and see Eirian and fellow RCM guitarist, Hope Cramsie, give the premier of B|O|R|D|E|R|S at the National Portrait Gallery as a part of the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize Exhibition of 2017.
